About the API

Which zodiac, ayanamsa and house system does it use?

The sidereal (Vedic) zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa, and whole-sign houses. Map planets by name, not by number, since numbering schemes differ.

Read the conventions
Does it do Western astrology or KP?

No. It is Vedic only, with the Lahiri ayanamsa. It does not return Western (tropical) positions, Placidus houses or the KP system.

How accurate is it, and against what?

We check it against Swiss Ephemeris. The Lahiri ayanamsa agrees to within 0.001 arc seconds, checked on 8 dates from 1900 to 2100. On one chart (New Delhi, noon on August 22, 2026), the Sun, the Moon and the five planets agree to within 1.5 arc seconds and the ascendant to within 5. Our tests fail if a difference grows past these limits. An arc second is 1/3,600 of a degree.

Is the reading text written by AI?

No. The text comes from a fixed library of readings, chosen by stated rules. The same birth details always get the same words, and every rule is in the public rulebook.

Browse the rulebook
What date range is supported?

1850 to 2149. This is the range covered by the NASA JPL planetary data the API uses.

Does it return Hindi?

Yes. Send lang=hi. Names and reading text come in Hindi from the same computation: weekdays, colors, sign names and gemstone names. Endpoint paths, codes and error messages stay in English.

Using it

Do I need a birth time?

For a birth chart, yes: the rising sign and the houses depend on it. Matching can run on the two nakshatras alone, tara bala needs only a birth nakshatra, and the panchang and festival calendars need only a date and a place.

Matching with no birth time
How are time zones and daylight saving time handled?

Send a time zone name such as America/New_York. The API applies the rules that were in force at the birth moment. It refuses a local time that happens twice when the clocks go back, instead of guessing.

Read the conventions
Does it return chart images?

No. It returns the data: the sign, house and degree of every planet. You draw the chart in your app, in the North or South Indian style your users prefer.

What the kundli API returns
Can I get a PDF report?

The API returns a self-contained printable HTML page from /v1/report. Print it to PDF in any browser, or convert it on your side.

About the report
Do you store the birth details I send?

No. The API uses them only to compute the answer, and request bodies are not stored. Send birth details in the body of a POST request, because URLs stay in the server's access log for 30 days.

Keys and limits

Is there a free plan?

Yes. Sign up, confirm your email and create a key in your account. The Free plan can call every endpoint, 2,000 calls a month. Test keys on any plan get their own free allowance of 1,000 calls a month, and they return the same real results as live keys. The live demo on the Astrology API page shows one real call without a key.

Read the quickstart
What is the rate limit, and what happens at 429?

Each live key has its own per-minute limit, so one busy key does not slow the others. Free keys get 60 calls a minute, Starter 120, Growth 300 and Scale 1,000. A full report or an annual forecast counts as 50 calls. Test keys get 10 a minute each. Over a limit, the API answers 429. The Retry-After header says how many seconds to wait, and the error code says which limit you hit. If you often get 429s, move to a larger plan.
